Hey, I've got another call, can you hold on ...??

I love electronics gadgets. I love the internet. ( Or as William Shatner calls it "the interweb"....duuuhhh....)

One of the most useful gadgets is the cell phone. It lends itself to convenience, and even a sense of security. One thing that really bugs me though. Call waiting ( yeah, I know that applies to landlines too, but doesn't seem to come up as often.)

If I'm talking to you on the phone, then lets talk on the phone. If you get another call..... well....... just let it roll over to phonemail. That's what it's there for. Please DO NOT tell me, "hey, I've got another call, can you hold on"?? Here's my answer. No, ....I won't. I consider people who do this on a regular basis guilty of purely RUDE behavior. ("regular basis" see, I'm allowing for the fact that there could occasionally be a bona fide emergency you may need to attend to) I've got a friend who does this often. Sooner or later he's gonna' figure out that every time he puts me on hold, I'm no longer on the other end when he comes back....... and it's not by accident!

Even worse is when I'm talking with someone, IN PERSON. The phone rings, and they feel compelled to answer. It's a phone, it's got phonemail. Answering while in the middle of a conversation with me is basically stating "hey, this incoming call is more important than our conversation". Well.......OK, that's fine. Just don't be all offended if I wander off at that point though. -You're- the one that decided our conversation was over.

Hey, that's it. Tell me what you think.

I agree! I don't think that Miss Manners would like it either.

And how about when you are talking to someone on the phone and they start talking to whomever is near them, totally ignoring what you --the person they called -- are saying? Ugh. Phone manners are atrocious these days.

Hmm, unfortunately you've just described my wife. The other thing she does, dials me up before she's finished with an "in person" conversation. I answer the phone, and I can hear her talking to someone in the background, but she doesn't initially respond to me answering the phone....... grrrrrrrrr.....

Heheh, one of my sisters does that all the time.
